Chicago chooses A Mercy

The Chicago Public Library has announced its 16th pick for the “One Book, One Chicago” city-wide book club: Toni Morrison’s latest novel, A Mercy.

“Professor Morrison is an American icon, and one of our most important writers and intellectuals,” said Commissioner Mary Dempsey. “The beautifully written A Mercy, just as the award-winning Beloved did before, provides an important exploration into American slavery and its effect on lives in the earliest days of our nation.”

Programming for this fall’s “One Book, One Chicago” book will include a staged reading with Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble members; genealogy workshops at various Library locations; and a film screening and discussion of Toni Morrison’s earlier novel, Beloved, starring Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey.
