Sonia Nazario Speaks, the UN Listens: The Author of Enrique’s Journey Discusses Global Migration

Pulitzer Prize-winning Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique’s Journey, recently addressed the United Nations about how to better manage global migration as part of its Panel Discussion on International Migration and Development.

While the UN emphasized how migration spurs positive development both in countries that receive and in those that send migrants, Nazario’s focus was different. Instead, she focused on how too many migrants, especially women, feel forced to leave their homelands and children to go abroad in order to survive, and how child-mother separations produce devastating consequences for families and society. She urged developed countries to focus on creating jobs in specific migrant-sending countries so more migrants can stay home—where most would rather be. Continue reading

DePaul University (IL) To Host Enrique’s Journey With Sonia Nazario

sonia nazarioDePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, will host Pulitzer Prize winning author Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique’s Journey, on Thursday, June 27 at 6pm.  Part of DePaul’s Facing History and Ourselves Collaboration, as well as the school’s second annual Summer Institute’s evening speaking event, Ms. Nazario will present on key issues in immigration and education.  She will additionally share the true story of Enrique, a Honduran boy who braved unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States.  Her talk is free and open to the public.

Read Sonia Nazario’s NYT Piece on Plight of Immigrant Children

In today’s New York Times (4/12/13) author Sonia Nazario contributed an op-ed which passionately argues against the injustices that immigrant children in America face.  Her piece builds upon themes she developed in her 2007 book Enrique’s Journey, an astonishing true story that recounts the unforgettable odyssey of a Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States.  The book that has been chosen for common reading at numerous colleges and universities including Valparaiso University, the University of Missouri and the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

More Good News for Sonia Nazario’s Enrique’s Journey!

Sonia Nazario’s Enrique’s Journey is one of three finalists for the 2012 One Book, One Denver program.  The winner will be chosen by popular vote before June 22. Even more good news, Enrique’s Journey has also been selected as the First-Year Experience title for both Cabrini College in Philadelphia and University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. All incoming freshmen at both colleges will be reading this book for the Fall of 2012.

More than 50 colleges and seven cities have chosen Enrique’s Journey for their common or one city reads. Many colleges select the book because it goes beyond a platform to talk about immigration. While encouraging global awareness, the book provides broad and deep discussions of large themes students grapple with: loss and hope, survival, community, family, diversity, and redemption. Students relate to a boy close to their own age who steels himself with great determination to get through difficult circumstances.

Two More Common Read Adoptions for Enrique’s Journey!

Enrique’s Journey, Pulitzer Prize-winner Sonia Nazario’s true story about the odyssey made by a Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States has been chosen by both Loyola University Chicago and Saint Louis University as their Freshman and Common Reads.

At Saint Louis University, Selection committee member Patrice French said:

Enrique’s Journey provides a completely different lens from which human beings live their life. It’s a raw account of how some people fight and risk their lives just to find a better lives for themselves. As well, I believe that there are elements in this book that demonstrate aspects of true service, which is in direct alignment with SLU’s mission.”
