Warren St. John speaks at the First-Year Experience Author Luncheon

Already adopted for several common reading programs at universities from Utah to Georgia and for community reading programs from San Diego to Maryland, Warren St. John’s new book about a team of refugee soccer players has undoubtedly captivated committees and readers.

In Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference , he takes readers to Clarkston, Georgia; a small town that, in the 1990s, became a resettlement center for refugees and a modern-day Ellis Island for scores of families from war zones in Liberia, Congo, Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan.

At the First-Year Experience Author Luncheon last month in Denver, Colorado the New York Times journalist spoke about his experience getting to know the Fugees, their coach Luma Mufleh, and the citizens of Clarkston.

Thomas Mullen speaks at First-Year Experience Author Luncheon

We’re back with more video from the First-Year Experience Author Luncheon, which took place at this year’s FYE Conference on February 15th in Denver, Colorado.

Second to speak was Thomas Mullen whose novel, Last Town on Earth , addresses issues of morality and ethical struggle as readers enter a Pacific Northwest town that has quarantined itself during the 1908 flu epidemic. With recent health scares still in the general forefront of most minds, the novel provides a timely yet historically rich story that will get your students talking.

See which programs have adopted Last Town on Earth.

West Texas A&M selects The Road of Lost Innocence

West Texas A&M University has selected The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine by Somaly Mam for their common reading program.

Somaly Mam was sold into sexual slavery by her grandfather when she was only twelve years old. For the next decade she was shuttled through the brothels that make up the sprawling sex trade of Southeast Asia. She suffered unspeakable acts of brutality and witnessed horrors that would haunt her for the rest of her life–until, in her early twenties, she managed to escape. Unable to forget the girls she left behind, Mam became a tenacious and brave leader in the fight against human trafficking, rescuing sex workers–some as young as five and six–offering them shelter, rehabilitation, healing, and love and leading them into new life.

Ms. Mam recently spoke at UCLA about her experiences and her foundation. Check out the video below.
