Joining the ranks of nearly 30 schools, such as the University of California, Los Angeles, Marquette University and Goucher College, Brookhaven College has selected The Other Wes Moore as their 2013 Common Reading book. According to Nelda Contreras, chair of Brookhaven’s Open Book Committee, the school is working on inventive programming such as panel discussions, contests and service-learning tie-ins to augment the book. Their 2012 pick was In the Sea There Are Crocodiles.
The Other Wes Moore was the winner of the 2011 BCALA (Black Caucus of ALA) Literary Award for nonfiction, and was named a 2011 Booklist Top 10 Black History Nonfiction Book.
