A “20-something dilemma”? What do you think?

Some may call it a sign of tough economic times, but Inside Higher Education is calling it a “dilemma”. . . of the “20-something” kind. The article’s author, Tim Henderson, presents his answer to the question attempted by so many professors, professionals and parents before him: “Why are 20-somethings taking so long to grow up?” He points to the fact that young people are moving back in with their parents, taking unpaid internships, or bouncing from job to job seemingly without direction in larger numbers than ever before. His conclusions provide much fodder for discussion.

    We’re in the throes of selecting our common reader for the 2011-2012 academic year, and the aspects of the dilemma Henderson points out are ripe for our own campus debates. The book we selected for the 2010-2011 academic year struck me as too basic, without enough depth. After students had read the book and heard the author talk on campus, many found him much more engaging in person than in his book, where his observations were surface ones. In my experience, students want to be pushed to look beyond the surface. Yes, we’re connected and we do know a lot, but knowing about your friend’s break up on Facebook doesn’t mean you know your “friend.” College should be a place to encourage those deeper examinations of self and situation. I hope the book we select for 2011-2012 at my college helps us, as faculty, do just that.
